Matana Roberts CD Release: COIN COIN Chapter 2, Mississippi Moonchile

This Saturday, October 5th, we will present saxophonist Matana Roberts on our stage as she celebrates the release of the second installment of COIN COIN, a work-in-progress that began with Chapter One: Gens de couleurs libres (2011). Chapter Two: Mississippi Moonchile features her New York jazz sextet, with Shoko Nagai on piano, Jason Palmer on trumpet, Thomson Kneeland on bass, Tomas Fujiwara on drums (Mike Pride will be filling for this Saturday's show), and operatic tenor Jeremiah Abiah. Described as an "iconoclastic and complex project of memory and recuperation, where historical and contemporary musical tropes, fragmentary spoken and sung narratives," this new recording is conceived of as an "album-length piece unto itself, channeling the drama and catharsis of Gens de couleur libres into something more measured and circumscribed, playing with notions of dignity, rarefaction and restraint." Matana, who performed with her band ANTHEM on our stage in June, is also featured on the cover of this month's issue of The Wire, the British avant garde music magazine.
