The Jazz Gallery Presents: Dabin Ryu

This Thursday, April 14, pianist Dabin Ryu will make her debut on The Jazz Gallery stage. A native of Seoul, South Korea, Ryu has studied at Berklee and the Manhattan School of Music. Since moving to New York in 2018, Ryu has established herself in the scene playing at Smalls, Zinc Bar, Dizzy’s, and more.

Last June, Ryu released her debut album Wall, recorded with her working band. Featuring all original compositions, the album is rooted in hard-charging bop, with a contemporary rhythmic gait. The tune “Suspicion” (shown below), features a clipped, asymmetrical melody that evokes Thelonious Monk’s “Evidence,” but is undergirded by a phantom backbeat.

Pianist Dabin Ryu plays The Jazz Gallery on Thursday, April 14, 2022. Ms. Ryu will be joined by Zoe Obadia and Nathan See on alto saxophone, Kevin Scollins on guitar, Benjamin Young on bass, and Willis Edmundson on drums. Sets are at 7:30 and 9:30 P.M.
