This weekend marks the return of New York’s annual Winter Jazz Festival, with a vast array of shows across Manhattan and Brooklyn. As part of the week’s festivities, The Jazz Gallery is pleased to host two nights of performances by artists from the label Pyroclastic Records. Founded by pianist Kris Davis in 2016, the label aims “to support those artists whose expression flourishes beyond the commercial sphere.”

On Friday, January 13, as part of the WJF Manhattan Marathon, the festival kicks off with bassist Chris Lightcap’s Superette Deluxe, a band of insistent groove and squeegeed textures.

Next up is the searching duo of guitarist Mary Halvorson and pianist Sylvie Courvoisier performing music from their 2021 record, Searching for the Disappeared Hour.

For the first evening’s late set, pianist Craig Taborn plays solo, continuing his exploration of touch and resonance.

On Saturday, Eric Revis presents music from his 2020 release Slipknots Though a Looking Glass:

While Patricia Brennan returns to once again perform music from her newest release, More Touch (check out our interview with her here).
