The Jazz Gallery Presents: Tom Rainey Trio

In 2010, after three decades of work as an in-demand sideman, drummer Tom Rainey finally released his first album as a leader, Pool School (Clean Feed). In an interview in JazzTimes, Rainey noted, “I am a very reluctant leader. I’m really happy to have done it and I’m proud of it, but I came to it kicking and screaming.” The album's results belie that sentiment. Featuring a trio including saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock and guitarist Mary Halvorson, Pool School showcases these top-tier musicians' creativity and rare telepathy over a dozen freely-improvised vignettes. Buoyed by the positive experience, Rainey is now regularly releasing albums under his own name, including two trio followups, and a set of deconstructed jazz standards, Obbligato.This Saturday, September 9th, The Jazz Gallery is pleased to welcome Rainey's trio back to our stage as they pass through on a tour of the northeast.
