Tineke Postma & Greg Osby SONIC HALO

PostmaOsbyHailing from the Netherlands, saxophonist Tineke Postma is a fast-rising star on both sides of the Atlantic. As an alumnus of both the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and the Manhattan School of Music, Postma has a distinctly transnational perspective, bridging the gap between diverse musical communities. She has performed with the likes of Esperanza Spalding and Geri Allen, and has had a long and fruitful relationship with drummer Terri Lyne Carrington—Carrington has performed on several of Postma's albums, while Postma featured heavily on Carrington's Grammy-winning 2011 record, Mosaic (Concord Jazz).Postma continues to split her time between Amsterdam and New York, and her latest record is the result of another longtime transatlantic musical relationship—this one with the saxophonist Greg Osby. The album, Sonic Halo (Challenge), came out this past Fall and has been met with positive notice across the world. In his four-star review for The Guardian, John Fordham writes that Sonic Halo "...is imaginative, accomplished contemporary jazz from an A-list group." Reflecting Postma's all-encompassing aesthetic, the music on Sonic Halo runs the gamut from slow burning minimalism on "Source Code," to undulating mixed meters on "Sea Skies," to driving, abstract funk on "Facets," to poignant lyricism on the ballad "Where I'm From." There's even a distinctly modern take on the standard "Body and Soul."Postma and Osby will present their engaging music from this acclaimed new album at The Jazz Gallery this Friday, January 9th. Don't miss your chance to hear these two great saxophonists spar before Postma jets off to her next destination.Tineke Postma and Greg Osby's Sonic Halo performs this Friday, January 9th, 2015, at The Jazz Gallery.
