The Jazz Gallery Presents: Jaleel Shaw

Saxophonist Jaleel Shaw returns to The Jazz Gallery this weekend for two nights of performances. After stretching out in a trio format with drummer Victor Lewis and bassist Matt Brewer at the Gallery this past April, Shaw will convene a home base quartet this time around with pianist Lawrence Fields, bassist Ben Street, and drummer Mark Whitfield Jr.

Many of Shaw’s compositions are grounded in the bonds of community and relationships. The pieces on his home-recorded album Echoes, for instance, include tributes to mentors like Lee Konitz and Rayburn Wright, inspirations like MF Doom, and the memories Breonna Taylor and Tulsa’s Black Wall Street. Before coming out the Gallery, check out Shaw and his quartet performing his tribute composition to Tamir Rice, below.

The Jaleel Shaw Quartet plays The Jazz Gallery on Friday, July 22, and Saturday, July 23, 2022. The group features Mr. Shaw on saxophone, Lawrence Fields on piano, Ben Street on bass, and Mark Whitfield Jr. on drums. Sets are at 7:30 and 9:30 P.M. E.D.T. each night. $25 general admission ($10 for members, FREE for SUMMERPASS holders), $35 reserved cabaret seating ($20 for members, $10 for SUMMERPASS holders). Purchase tickets here.
