The Jazz Gallery Presents: Kendrick Scott

Drummer/composer Kendrick Scott has had a busy 2023 thus far. In May, Scott traveled to his hometown of Houston for a new large-scale worked commissioned by Dacamera called Unearthed. Featuring longtime collaborators like Gerald Clayton, Joe Sanders, and Walter Smith III, as well as the Harlem Quartet and poet Deborah D.E.E.P Mouton, Scott’s piece memorializes the Sugar Land 95, a group of Black convict laborers—slaves by another name—whose remains were recently found in an unmarked grave in Sugar Land, Texas.

Earlier this year, Scott released Corridors, his latest album on Blue Note. In a trio with bassist Reuben Rogers and saxophonist Walter Smith III, the original compositions and choice arrangement of Bobby Hutcherson’s “Is This My Sound Around Me?” place the focus squarely on well-honed interplay. You can stream the whole record below.

This week, Scott is back in New York and brings a different trio to The Jazz Gallery for two sets, featuring bassist Vincente Archer and saxophonist John Ellis.

The Kendrick Scott Trio plays The Jazz Gallery on Friday, July 28, 2023. The group features Mr. Scott on drums, Vincente Archer on bass, and John Ellis on saxophone. Sets are at 7:30 and 9:30 P.M.
