The Jazz Gallery Presents: Martin Nevin
This Thursday, October 17, The Jazz Gallery is pleased to welcome bassist Martin Nevin and his ensemble back to our stage for two sets. In 2018, Nevin released his debut album as a leader, Tenderness is Silent. Featuring all original compositions, the album reflected Nevin's wide range of influences, both musical and extra-musical. In a previous interview with Jazz Speaks, Nevin spoke about the particular influence of film on his sense of musical pacing:
Film has always been really important to me. My father is a cinematographer, so an appreciation of film as an artistic medium was instilled in me from a young age. Lately I’ve been focused on how filmmakers think about the structure and pacing of their work. There are so many ways films can go: some are meditative, some are extremely fast paced, some tell you what’s going to happen in the beginning and then spend the rest of the time leading you back to that point. I often gravitate towards films, (and pieces of music), that reveal themselves slowly, where the atmosphere slowly envelops and mesmerizes you.
Before hearing Nevin's lush and atmospheric music at the Gallery on Thursday, take a listen to his composition "Grasp at Nothing," performed live at The Jazz Gallery, below.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t52AF5ObN6c Martin Nevin plays The Jazz Gallery on Thursday, October 17, 2019.
