Pianist Gabriel Chakarji, vibraphonist Juan Diego Villalobos, and percussionist Daniel Prim each began their musical training in the rich musical world of Caracas, Venezuela. Their studies included classical music (including with the famed El Sistema program) and jazz, and they used these approaches to explore Afro-Venezuelan musical traditions.

Through their own unique journeys, Chakarji, Villalobos, and Prim all moved to New York, and recently joined forces in Caracas Trio. The group’s music stretches both forward and back in time, exploring the folkloric music of Venezuela with contemporary timbre and rhythm, well-encapsulated in their composition “Folklore,” which you can check out below.

This weekend, Caracas Trio makes their Jazz Gallery debut. They will be joined by special guest saxophonist Miguel Zenon, a lodestar for exploring Afro-Latin traditions with contemporary improvisation.

Caracas Trio plays The Jazz Gallery on Saturday, June 10, 2023. The group features Juan Diego Villalobos on vibraphone/synths/percussion, Gabriel Chakarji on piano/keyboards/percussion, Daniel Prim on drums/percussion, and special guest Miguel Zenon on saxophone.
