The Jazz Gallery Presents: Esteban Castro

Last summer, pianist Esteban Castro brought his working trio to The Jazz Gallery, featuring bassist Gervis Myles and drummer Kayvon Gordon. The group had just started working together, but their strong connection was already apparent. In an interview with Jazz Speaks, Castro spoke about the impact of having Myles’s and Gordon’s personalities in his compositions:

I definitely feel like with musicians like Gervis and Kayvon, and other musicians who really have a personality, they can change your perception of your own music. It's really nice. So I'll write something and maybe I'll have something vague in mind, and then they won't do exactly that. They'll do a different thing. Then I'm like, “Oh, wow! Now I know that's what I wanted for this piece. I would never have imagined that when I was writing.”

This week, Castro and the trio return to The Jazz Gallery alongside singer Mar Vilaseca. Check out the trio playing Castro’s original “Indigo Flurries” from last year, and then come out to see where the trio is off to now.
