The Jazz Gallery Presents: Luciana Souza

Since her debut album in 2002, vocalist & composer Luciana Souza has forged a distinct musical world merging traditions from her native Brazil with everything from jazz to pop to art song. She’s been nominated for 8 GRAMMY awards, including one this past year for Cometa, her collaboration with Trio Corrente. Souza and the trio recently stopped by NPR’s Washington DC office to play at the famed Tiny Desk.

This week, Souza returns to The Jazz Gallery with a different project. In summer 2022, Souza received a Chamber Music America New Jazz Works grant to compose a new album-length piece, Twenty-Four Short Musical Episodes, that loosely tracks a day in one’s life. The piece was originally composed for bassist Scott Colley and guitarist Chico Pinheiro, who will reconvene with Souza and percussionist Rogerio Boccato at the Gallery. In addition to featuring this new commissioned work, the ensemble will perform material from their 2018 album, The Book of Longing.

The Jazz Gallery presents Luciana Souza on Thursday, May 30, 2024. Ms. Souza (vocals) will be joined by Chico Pinheiro on guitar, Scott Colley on bass, and Rogerio Boccato on percussion. Sets are at 7:30 and 9:30 P.M. E.D.T. $35 general admission ($20 for members), $45 reserved cabaret seating ($30 for members), $20 livestream access ($5 for members) for each set.
